STOLEN: Available for Pre-Order

The term pre-order irks me. It's along the same lines as preheating the oven. The prefix “pre” means “prior to” or “before.” So technically speaking, the oven is preheating before it’s turned on. Once it's on, the oven is actually heating. Pre-order seems to indicate the phase before ordering something, but when you think about it, once you click that button and pay for a product, you have indeed ordered said product. Pre-order actually means, pre-release order, but that’s just too long and we live in a society that abbreviates everything whenever possible. Therefore, the “release” gets dropped, shortening “pre-release order” to” pre-order.” I have spent years avoiding the term pre-order, but I suppose, now that I am excited about the publication of my first book, I can no longer do so.
On Wednesday, I went onto my publisher’s website to link it to a book review I was posting on my website. While there, I wandered over to my book and noticed—very excitedly—that it was available for preorder. Seeing my book available, not only on Unsolicited Press’ website, but also on Amazon, makes it feel so much more real. It’s really happening. My book is getting published. I am going to be an author. I have worked, not only years, but decades to achieve this goal. There were so many times I wanted to quit, that I tried to quit, but my need to write, my desire to tell stories, always overcame my disappointments and rejections.
While my book can be ordered now, it won’t be published until September 16—five days after my birthday. Five and half years—to the day—that I started the blog that became my memoir. I had wanted to have a launch party. It’s what you do when you publish a book. It’s what I wanted, but I’ve learned over the years that things rarely happen the way I want. And now, circumstances are such that a launch party may not be possible. But September is still several months away, so I suppose a great deal can happen between now and then.
