Shenandoah Day 4

It rained over night. There is something peaceful and soothing about rain tapping against the fabric of the tent. However, it is never fun to pack up a soggy tent. We woke up early since we had to drive home and didn’t want to get in late since G3 has school tomorrow. It was cold and damp and still drizzling so we warmed up with hot chocolate before getting on the road.
On the way out of the park, we stopped near mile marker 10 for one final hike. Kati loved the odd geographical formations that formed a large boulder. It is made up of naturally formed hexagonal columns, although the hexagons are weathered and now look more circular. We visited the formation two years ago when we were last in Shenandoah and Kati wanted to go again. The hike to the formation was only two miles round trip, but it was rocky and hilly and it killed Kati’s knee. However, G3 was really good about helping her down the more precarious section. Even though it rained while we drove to the parking lot, it thankfully stopped when we got there. We enjoyed the hike, but enjoyed being together more. We expected it would take an hour, but it took closer to two. I didn’t mind. I was more than happy to spend the time outside.

The drive home felt endless, much longer than the drive there. Perhaps it’s because we were returning home which is always the most depressing part of any getaway. The cats were very happy to see us. Even Kramer came out for treats. And Dante and Bean were happy to be pet.

They are hexagonal protrusions, not octagons!
