Cape Cod Day 5

The storm raged through the night and when I woke up it was still drizzling. Despite the rain, I went hiking. There are hiking trails not far from the house—trails close enough to walk to—so I opted to explore those this morning. The trails are relatively flat—with a few slight ups and downs—and sandy and covered in a layer of soft (and spongy from the rain) pine needles which was good since I was wearing sneakers. I didn’t think to bring hike boots on this trip.
The trails led me first to Duck Pond. Duck Pond is one of several kettle ponds on Cape Cod. They were formed roughly 15,000 years ago. Back then glaciers covered much of this area. When the ice melted, they left behind giant holes in the ground, many of which are shaped like kettles. These hole then filled with fresh ground water, creating the ponds that exist today.
From Duck Pond, the trails meandered, weaving through the forest. I followed them until they brought me to Cahoon Hallow Beach. It is one of the Wellfleet town beaches. Sadly, there were no seals to greet me this morning. The water, however, was much rougher than it was yesterday, probably due to the storm. The rain had stopped but it was still cloudy.
Stupidly, I neglected to bring bug spray so the mosquitoes feasted on me. Many of them lost their lives. I generally don’t like killing living beings but when they attack first I have no qualms about protecting myself. Other than mosquitoes, the only wildlife I saw on the trail was a frog.

It remained cloudy, so when I got home Mom and I played dominoes. After G3 woke up, sometime around noon, he and Mom watched TV while I read out on the deck.
Mom and my brother decided to go see The Odyssey this afternoon. G3 and I want to see it as well, but since Kati also wants to see it, we decided to wait so we could watch it with her. Instead, he and I went to play mini-golf at Cape Escape Adventure Golf in Orleans. The place was packed. I am not sure it’s ever taken me so long to get through a course. I guess on a rainy day there isn’t much else to do in a beach area.
After the game, I suggested a swim but G3 didn’t want to go to the beach. He suggested badminton instead. We tried to play but it was too windy. The breeze made hitting the shuttlecock too difficult. So, we switched to ping pong which we played until G3 got cranky. He is now watching TV and I am going to read in my favorite place in the house. Seriously, I wish I had a nice quiet secluded deck like this.
We all had a very lovely evening. We headed into P-town and mom took us to Liz’s Cafe for dinner. It was a cute restaurant on Bradford Street. The parking lot had been converted into a cute outdoor patio. Sitting outside was definitely the right decision because the inside was too crowded, too loud The food was fabulous. I had cod Florentine which I very much enjoyed. We all enjoyed our meals.
After we ate, we took a stroll down Commercial Street. G3 had been looking forward to that all week. He always enjoyed Commercial Street when he was younger. We stopped in a few souvenir shops and reminisced about things we used to do. My brother bought a denim jacket and when he put it on to show us, G3 went right back to the store in which he bought it to pick one out for himself. The two of them looked cute in their new semi-matching jackets.

We stopped for ice cream. Mom and my brother got ice cream in his favorite ice cream shop and G3 and I revisited the place we often went for ice cream. I was happy they still had the mudslide flavor.
